Atmosphere is everything. Just like with a thriving pub or nightclub when it is in full flow, a busy gym can fill you with energy. Endorphins flowing, music pumping, hard work and that feeling of accomplishment after a good session beats a night in the pub for me anyday.
Friday evening circa 2000 – head to the pub after work for a few drinks. Friday evening 2015 head to the gym! May sound strange to some but, from what I can tell, it is a reality for many.
Are we more health conscious as a nation? Has social media opened the doors to the fitness world that had previously been closed to people? Is it the need to take countless selfies in the squat rack? Probably a little of all of the above.
Going to the gym for some people is all business, in and out – get the workout done. For others it is most definitely a social experience. Whether it is going to a morning class after dropping the kids to school or heading in after a long day at work to relieve stress, everybody has their own reason. In my opinion it is this variety that creates the atmosphere in the gym. Different people, different backgrounds, different goals but all working hard to achieve them.
If you still don’t believe me that the gym is the new pub then try this quick experiment. Have a look at your fb/twitter/instagram timeline. Look at the last 20 pics/posts/tweets. How many are about going out drinking? How many are about fitness? Now think back to what that same timeline would have looked like 5 years ago J
